Moulds and damage

Fungi and toadstools or mushrooms are actually fast developed molds organism. Long-term moisture content of at least 22% can cause fungi on grass, trees, but also in basements and wooden floors. We think about beautiful mushrooms in nature knowing by red with white dots, but fungi in houses make us less happy and entail serious health risks and material damage. Few facts about fungi.

Fungi indoors is nothing more than a plague of a living organism. Not only due to high moisture content and poor ventilation, but also due to the spreading of seeds or spore  a serious pest can arise in no time. So be there on time!

If you say autumn, you also say mushrooms. In autumn is more organic material are available for fungi to feed themselves. But the fungus is actually present all year and in all seasons through a network of wires. Especially in basements and crawl spaces, it remains cool and moist and the wood serves as a good breeding ground through cellulose (nutrient of moulds).

Catch a cold
In fall or spring you might think you have a nose cold after another sneeze or sniffling. It may well be that there are moulds in your house. Are the plinths becoming loose and do you smell an earthy, stale air? Then all alarm bells should ring.

Fungi are most common in crawl spaces and basements in homes built before 1960. These homes consist of wooden floors where fungi can easily settle. The behaviour of residents can influence the development of fungi. Some tenants report fungal nuisance too late, because they simply do not notice it. Leaks, little ventilation and being economical with heating are also detrimental. Within a few months, a hole will be form in the floor due to uncontrollable fungi . Another reason to turn the heater up in fall and winter.

Fungi are treatable and damage can be limited by acting in time. EWS Pest control employees are qualified specialists who, after the removal of moulds, can treat the room preventively against moulds by, for example, placing insulation chips so that the room remains drier. You can say goodbye for a long time to all your fungi problems.

Small insects that can cause a lot of damage: read more about bedbugs here

Bedbugs are becoming a big problem. We come across them in hotels, but also in company buildings and houses. Besides that, we spot an increasement of truck cabins contaminated with bedbugs. An infestation can be an enormous disruption with all following consequences. In hotels, damage to the reputation is an example of this. But how can bedbugs cause so much damage?

Bedbugs live of human blood and are very annoying, because they leave behind itchy bite wounds. You can often recognise the bites of a bedbug when you have a line of bites on the skin. They are called bedbugs, because they mainly live in and around the bed. Think of the mattress, the frame and headboard of the bed. This way they can easily bite people in their sleep. The bugs can also move to neighboring rooms or apartments. Besides that, bedbugs can easily be carried from place to place. This is easy for them, because they attach themselves to luggage and clothes.

The bedbug lives of blood and it is a fable that a room with a bedbug infestation is also dirty. The insects can just as well be brought into a spotless hotel via a guest. It is never the hotels fault that the bedbugs entered. However, the hotel can and must do everything it can to control the infestation. A bedbug infestation is very persistent and that is why it is wise to hire a professional for the control. EWS Pest control tackles bedbugs in a professional and effective way. Cluster flies: harmless, but bothersome!

Spring is here and it’s starting to get warmer. That’s nice, but it also brings along bother with cluster flies.

Life stages

The cluster fly looks much like a usual fly. The cluster fly is a bit longer. The colour of the fly is brown-grey and its breast is covered in gold hairs. In the different life stages (egg-larvae-pop-adult), the cluster fly changes a lot. The females lay eggs under the ground, these eggs hatch within three days in the summer. After hatching, the larvae actively search for earthworms. Once they found one, they drill a hole in them and eat them from the inside. As soon as the worm died, the larvae will pop under the ground. It is common for cluster flies to have two generations per year, but if it is very hot in summer, they can also have as much as four. Adults feed with the nectar of flowers.

The cluster fly thanks his name to the fact that they winter in swarms of possibly a thousand flies. They do this in the tops of buildings in covered places, like corners and cracks. In spring, when it’s slowly starting to lighten up and get warmer, the flies awake and are attracted by the light. They will mainly hang around the building they wintered in. After a couple of weeks they leave the building. The cluster flies can be very bothersome, because they are never alone, but always in a swarm. That is why we recommend getting rid of them by a professional in pest control.

Cluster flies are harmless, but they can be very bothersome in big numbers. They sit on windows in swarms for example (because they are attracted by light). EWS Pest control is your professional in fighting the cluster fly. We do this by performing a seams and cracks treatment. This means that, in autumn, we spray an insecticide on every possible entrance in the top of the building. Consequently, flies that are looking for cover and try to get In, will be killed instantly. To prevent any fly from surviving, we always carry out a second treatment in spring. This way, the flies that come out after wintering are also killed.

  1. Architectural: mice are small and can get through the smallest holes. That is why you should make sure that your home or office doesn’t have a passageway bigger than half a centimetre. In addition, make sure that all doors close for 100% horizontally and vertically. You can close ventilation openings with stainless steel mesh.

Cluster flies, French field wasps and garden ants.

Spring has started! The temperature is higher; the days are longer and we all are more outside. Also, you can find more and more insects which are awaken from there hibernation.

Examples of these are the cluster flies, French field wasps and garden ants.

Cluster flies:
Cluster flies are found on the in- and outside of buildings during the first warm days of the year, where they hibernated. They will come through the cracks and crevices of the buildings in large numbers, which often may cause inconvenience.

What can you do to reduce the inconvenience by cluster flies to a minimum?

  • Place screens in open windows and doors
  • Placing small grills in front of vents in the wall

French field wasps:
The French field wasps is a social wasp that increasingly is signaled in the Netherlands.
They have a social life style and live in a nation of mostly less than one hundred individuals.
The big difference between the French field wasps and “lemonade” wasps that we know is that they are having an open nest. Therefore, they are good to observe.

Often they build multiple nests next to each other. The number of nests which is made can be as much as 10 nests within a radius of 5 meters. The French field wasp has a sting and can be stabbing like another wasp’s species.

The Queen of this wasp species, different from other wasp species, are as large as the workers and therefore difficult to distinguish from the rest of the wasps.

What do we advise with wasp’s inconvenience?
We always advise at first to be ensure that the species are named (determined) so that they can successfully be removed.

Garden ants:
The first garden ants are already signaled. This are usually the Black Garden Ants or the Glossy Wood Ants. In their search for food ants can be entering your home or business building. Once the sweetness is found, there will be setting out a track by the workers.
The track, called ant street, will be followed by other workers with all the inconvenience that entails.

What can you do to reduce the inconvenience by ants?

  • Ensure spilled sweetness is immediately cleared
  • Avoid overflowing bins and make sure that foods are covered
